  • Two weeks ago I got my new shiny titanium hip! ✨🦿 I’d love to share this highlight with you through some of my hospital sketchbook pages! The afternoon after the surgery, I had a lot of energy and creativity, which was probably the meds talking 🥴 1. Sketch of the x-ray showing my new shiny hip 🤩 (made at home, see 5.) 2. Sketch of my old hip ball (femoral head) that the surgeon showed me in the OR after I woke up 😁 I didn’t want to forget that image, so I had to draw it. 3. And me stretching my toes in my hospital bed while reading a great book (I’ll share which book in my story) 4. Me and my crutches! A little bit further every day. Nine years ago I had to stop playing basketball, because I was in pain and it appeared to be (already severe) artritis in both my hips. It has been influencing my life more and more. When last year a herniated disc in my lower back came on top of that, it was time for change!   • My summer in sketches ☀️ I brought very limited art supplies that easily fit into my handbag. While I wish I could have painted more, I’m still happy with the amount of pages I filled. Sketching … ✈️ while flying to our family in the Netherlands, 🎙️ the @alanis concert in Zuiderpark, 🪣 backyard sand and water fun, ⛱️ at the beach, 🔔 the church in Nesbyen, 🫎 animals, kids and the view at @langedrag_naturpark , 🛝 during playground and café visits, and 🚗 a view from the car window.   • Hello everybody! Thank you for your support! ❤️ I gained quite a few new followers over the past half year ✨ but I haven’t been very active here lately… So here’s a sketchbook page of the little girl who grew up to become me. I’m currently dealing with some physical challenges with my lower back and hips, which means the exciting projects I’m working on are taking a bit longer than planned. I haven’t been able to spend long periods sitting, which makes illustration a difficult job… But I’m slowly getting better and can now spend more time at my desk! 💪 This little girl inside me is so happy to draw and paint again.   • Hoe lang doe je eigenlijk over een illustratie? 👀 In deze reel vertel ik je hoe dat proces eruitziet en hoeveel uur er in één spread gaat zitten. Wat denk jij dat hier in het verhaal gebeurt? For my international followers: How long does it take to create an illustration like this one? 🤔 That’s a difficult question to answer, because a lot of time goes into brainstorming, sketching, developing the characters and creating the storyboard for the entire book. After that, I make a detailed sketch for each spread before painting the final illustration, which takes me about 10 hours for a spread like this one. #louenlev #prentenboek #prentenboekillustrator #illustratie #kinderboekillustratie
  • Een droom die uitkomt! ✨ Vorige week was ik op bezoek bij @uitgeverijlemniscaat (een droom op zich). Na het bespreken van mijn prentenboekidee kreeg ik van Jesse Goossens een contract aangeboden!!! 🥳😱🤩 Die lach is sindsdien niet meer van mijn gezicht verdwenen (zie foto strip). Ik werk al even aan een fantastisch leuk project: een nieuw boek van @auteur.evydanckers illustreren. Mijn bezoek stond in het teken van kennismaken, een rondleiding bij mijn nieuwe uitgeverij (!!) en het bespreken van mijn schetswerk. Dat ik naar huis ging met nog een contract én het vooruitzicht dat mijn eigen prentenboek in het voorjaar van 2027 bij Lemniscaat verschijnt, had ik nooit durven dromen! Ik heb er ontzettend veel zin in! Het wordt fantastisch! 🤩 En ik zal jullie op de hoogte houden met hier en daar een sneak peek. 👀 Spannend!! See English text in comments
  • Een bezoek aan mijn eerste expo 🖼️✨ Mijn illustraties uit De laatste traan zo naast elkaar zien hangen, met mijn naam groot op de muur gestickerd… wat bijzonder! Extra leuk was het om An Van Daele, de schrijfster, eindelijk in het echt te ontmoeten. En grote dank aan @cctervesten , het cultuurcentrum van Beveren, voor het mogelijk maken van deze expo! Dit was één van de hoogtepunten van mijn ‘zakenreis’ door Nederland en België vorige week. Jullie zagen al de fantastische boeklancering van Wedstrijdje doen?! in het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis voorbij komen. En er komt nóg iets moois aan… Morgen meer 👀✨ 🇬🇧 Visiting my first exhibition 🖼️✨ Seeing my illustrations from The Last Tear all together on the wall — with my name right there — felt incredibly special. So lovely to finally meet the writer, An Van Daele! Huge thanks to CC Ter Vesten in Beveren for making this exhibition possible.
